(English follows) Les résidents de Kahnawake pourront se prononcer concernant la vente de cannabis sur leur territoire. Un référendum aura lieu sur la question. Les citoyens en ont fait la suggestion, le 25 septembre, lors de la consultation publique portant sur le futur règlement sur le contrôle du cannabis qui entrera en vigueur sur la réserve.

« Nous avons fait beaucoup de consultations et il y a un large appui pour la loi que nous voulons mettre en place. Cependant, l’appui est moins clair pour l’aspect de la vente sur notre territoire. La communauté est divisée », a expliqué Joe Delaronde, attaché politique au Conseil mohawk de Kahnawake.

Aucune date n’est encore avancée pour la tenue du référendum, mais M. Delaronde assure qu’il se tiendra d’ici un mois.

Il indique que les membres du conseil de bandes de Kahnawake ont eu plusieurs réunions au cours de la semaine pour discuter des modalités.

M. Delaronde mentionne que certains résidents sont réticents à ce que la vente de cannabis soit légale sur la réserve « parce qu’ils ne sont pas à l’aise avec toute la notion du cannabis puisque ça a été illégal si longtemps ». D’autres considèrent que la vente de cannabis pourrait générer des retombées positives pour la communauté.

Kahnawake maintient son moratoire sur la vente et la production de cannabis sur son territoire. Malgré la légalisation de la substance le 17 octobre, quand la loi fédérale sera en vigueur, le statu quo demeurera à Kahnawake.

Kahnawake to hold referendum on cannabis

Kahnawake residents will be able to pronounce themselves regarding the sale of cannabis on their territory.

A referendum will be held on the question. The citizens made the suggestion on September 25 at the public consultation dealing with the future bylaw on the control of cannabis which will go into force on the reserve.
‘’We have done lots of consultations and there is large support for the law that we want to put in place. However, the support is less clear for the sale aspect on our territory. The community is divided,’’ explained Mohawk Council of Kahnawake political attaché Joe Delaronde.
No date has yet been advanced for the holding of the referendum, but Delaronde assures that it will be held before the end of October.
He indicates that the members of the MCK have had several meetings during the week to discuss the terms and conditions.
Delaronde says that certain residents are reticent about the sale of cannabis being legalized on the reserve ‘’because they are not at ease with the notion of cannabis because it was illegal for such a long time.’’ Others consider that the sale of cannabis could generate positive repercussions for the community.
Kahnawake will probably hold its moratorium on the sale and production of cannabis on its territory beyond October 17, the date on which the product will become legal in Canada.
