Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer has been elected by the community as the new Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, on Saturday, July 3rd, announced the Electoral Officer Angus L. Montour.

The Grand Chief was elected with 573 votes. According to Kahnawake’s local radio station, K103.7, she is the first woman to head the MCK. In an interview, she said she was at a loss for words, but felt mostly honoured that her vision, platform, language and culture set her apart from the other candidates.  

Her closest challenger, Gina Deer, received 368 votes.
