(English follows) Tout juste élu, le nouveau maire de Châteauguay a publié un commentaire Facebook controversé à l’endroit d’un partisan du candidat indépendant Steve Brisebois. Pierre-Paul Routhier se justifie en disant avoir voulu ainsi «défendre la Ville».
Dans son message, M. Routhier invite Charles Ghorayeb, sur la page Facebook personnel de ce dernier, à «déménager en Sibérie et à le faire vite» (traduction libre). M. Ghorayeb n’est plus un résident de Châteauguay, mais s’est déjà présenté deux fois à la mairie de cette ville il y a une dizaine d’années. Pendant la dernière campagne, il appuyait ouvertement le candidat Steve Brisebois. L’échange entre les deux hommes a circulé sur les médias sociaux au lendemain des élections. M. Ghorayeb l’ayant partagé afin, écrivait-il, «de montrer les vraies couleurs » du nouveau maire après l’avoir lui-même qualifier de «Slick Lawyer» pendant la campagne (que l’on pourrait traduire par avocat rusé, malveillant).
Défendre la Ville
Questionné par le Soleil de Châteauguay, M. Routhier a d’abord voulu remettre la conversation dans son contexte. D’abord en soutenant que les critiques de M. Ghorayeb à son endroit avaient été répétitives pendant toute la campagne. Ensuite, et surtout, a-t-il souligné, parce que M. Ghorayeb a été cité à quelques reprises dans le rapport d’enquête de la Commission Charbonneau. «Ça, ça nuit à toute la Ville de Châteauguay, s’est-il exclamé. Dès que j’ai su que j’étais élu, j’ai écrit ce message pour lui dire : « ne viens pas jouer ici, tu n’es pas le bienvenu ». Je voulais qu’il sache que s’il s’attendait à recommencer ses manigances avec moi, ça ne se passerait pas».
Quant à savoir si ce commentaire était déplacé pour le représentant d’une ville comme Châteauguay, le nouveau maire a dit ne pas avoir de regrets. «Je suis comme ça. J’aime aller droit au but. On peut s’attaquer à moi personnellement, ce n’est pas trop grave, mais si on veut nuire à la ville, je vais la défendre» a-t-il poursuivi.
Pas une «raison valable», selon M. Ghorayeb
Selon M. Ghorayeb, que le Journal a contacté le 10 novembre, la raison évoquée par M. Routhier est «un peu faible», dit-il. «Mon nom a seulement été mentionné dans le rapport, mais il n’y a pas eu d’accusation», soutient-il.
Quant au commentaire de M. Routhier, M. Ghorayeb dit ne pas «le prendre à la légère». «Je ne pense pas qu’on puisse faire taire la dissidence en exilant les gens!» a-t-il lancé. Il a toutefois admis qu’il régnait une grande tension pendant la campagne électorale, et a dit souhaiter laisser cette histoire derrière lui en espérant que «les esprits s’apaisent». «J’espère qu’il (M. Routhier) retrouvera maintenant sa maniabilité et qu’il représentera tous les Châteauguois, sans mettre ceux qui ne pensent pas comme lui à l’écart», a-t-il conclut.

Routhier issues conroversial comment to an adversary
Just elected, Chateauguay’s new mayor published a comment to a partisan of independent mayoral candidate Steve Brisebois on Facebook last week. Pierre-Paul Routhier justifies himself by saying he thus wanted to « protect the City. »
In his message, Routhier invites Charlie Ghorayeb, on the latter’s personal Facebook page, to « please move to Siberia. And please make it soon. » Ghorayeb is no longer a resident of Chateauguay, having moved to Brossard, but in the past he ran for mayor of Chateauguay twice some 20-odd years ago. During the last election campaign, he openly supported Brisebois. The exchange between Ghorayeb and Routhier circulated on the social media the day following the elections. Ghorayeb, who had earlier referred to Routhier on facebook as « The Slick Lawyer, » replied to Routhier’s retort as « showing his true colours. »
Protecting the City
Questioned by Le Soleil de Châteauguay, Routhier first wished to put the conversation into its proper context, by pointing out that Ghorayeb’s critiques towards him had been repetitive during the entire campaign. Next, and especially, he emphasized, because Ghorayeb had been quoted a few times in the report of the Charbonneau Commission hearings. « That harmed the entire City of Chateauguay, » Routhier exclaimed. « As soon as I knew that I was elected, I wrote this message to tell him : ‘Don’t come and play here. You are not welcome. ‘» I wanted him to know that if he expected to begin his little schemes again with me, it would not succeed. »
As far as knowing if this comment was out of place for the representative of a city like Chateauguay, the new mayor said he had no regrets. « I’m like that. I like to go straight to the point. One can attack me personally; that’s not too serious. But if one wants to sully the city, I am going to protect it, » he vowed.
« Not a valid reason » – Ghorayeb
According to Ghorayeb, whom Le Soleil contacted on November 10, the reason cited by Routhier is « rather weak, » he said. « My name was only mentioned in the (Charbonneau Commission) report, but there was no accusation made, » he says.
As for Routhier’s comment, Ghorayeb says he did not « take it lightly. I don’t think that one can silence dissidence by exiling people! » he noted. However, he admitted that great tension reigned during the election campaign, and he said he wished to leave this story behind him while hoping that «people calm down. I hope that he (Routhier) will now recover his manageability and that he will represent all Chateauguay residents, without shunting aside those who don’t think like he does, » he concluded.
