Since the beginning of the year 2022, private vehicle thefts are on the rise in the region, according to the Châteauguay Police Department. Nearly 70 cases of vehicle theft have been processed and the police are calling on citizens to be more vigilant.

“Following an analysis of the situation, we want to inform owners of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) or pickup trucks that a substantial increase in thefts has been observed for these types of vehicles. We are concerned about this problem,” said Jason Sedgwick, Community Officer with the Châteauguay Police Department.
Targeted Vehicles
The most popular models for thieves are Honda vehicles (CRV and Pilot) as well as Ford vehicles (F-150 Raptor edition). Toyota (RAV4, 4Runner, Highlander), Acura (MDX) and Dodge RAM are also targeted by thieves, but at a lesser rate, says Sedgwick.
According to Sedgwick, these types of crimes usually occur at night or early in the morning on private property.
Knowing how to protect yourself
In return, the police force suggests:
– Parking your vehicle in a well-lit area;
– Parking your vehicle in a garage;
– Parking a vehicle behind the targeted vehicle so that suspects cannot leave with it;
– Storing your keys in a safe place, away from entrance doors, or in a Faraday-type box/pouch that blocks the electronic key signal;
– Making sure your vehicle doors are locked and windows are closed;
– Equipping your vehicle with a security device (alarm system, geolocation or immobilizer);
– Installing an anti-theft device on the steering wheel of your vehicle;
– Installing a motion detector or a surveillance camera system near the driveway;
– Avoid hanging your keys on the outside wall of your home
This phenomenon of increased theft is also being observed in several other Quebec regions, said Mr. Sedgwick. It is the case in Châteauguay’s neighbouring cities which are served by the Régie Intermunicipale de police Roussillon, who has also noticed an increase in thefts over the past few months.
In the event of a theft, or when a suspicious person is seen, the Châteauguay Police Department invites citizens to call the police service by dialling 911. It will be important at that time to give an accurate description of your vehicle and/or a description of the potential suspect, explained Jason Sedgwick.
