(English follows) Trois soeurs de Kahnawake ont séjourné en même temps au pavillon des naissances de l’hôpital Anna-Laberge à Châteauguay au début du mois d’août. Emily, Melissa et Kelliann Frate ont chacune accouché de leur enfant dans un délai de 44 heures.

Les trois sœurs sont unanimes, cette histoire n’aurait pas pu être planifiée. Tout d’abord, il s’agit d’un hasard que les trois femmes soient tombées enceintes au même moment. «Nous n’étions pas ensemble au même party», rigole Kelliann Frate.
Leurs dates prévues d’accouchement s’échelonnaient sur neuf jours, mais il en a été autrement.
«Tout a commencé le 31 juillet», raconte la mère des trois filles, Tammy Standup, qui se plaît à appeler cette aventure «son marathon miraculeux». Ce jour-là, Kelliann Frate a été admise vers 19h30 à l’hôpital de Châteauguay. Deux heures et demie plus tard, elle avait son petit garçon dans les bras. «C’était honnêtement parfait, je m’attendais à ce que ce soit plus long étant donné qu’à mon premier, ça avait duré plus de 24 heures», raconte la maman. Sa sœur Melissa a assisté à l’accouchement, elle qui, selon sa date prévue, devait aussi accoucher cette journée-là. «La voir accoucher m’a fait peur, parce que j’ai réalisé que moi aussi je m’en allais vers ça», confie Melissa. Finalement, moins de 24 heures plus tard, ses contractions ont commencé. Arrivée à l’hôpital à 4h15 le 2 août, elle a accouché de sa fille vers 9h le matin. Sa sœur Kelliann et le petit Dominic étaient dans la chambre avec elle.
Et de trois
Quant à l’aînée des trois, Emily, elle avait été admise au pavillon des naissances le 1er août en prévision d’un accouchement déclenché artificiellement. Elle tenait à être présente au moment de la naissance de la fille de Melissa, mais elle était branchée à une machine de monitoring. «J’appelais sans cesse (les infirmières), mais elles étaient tellement occupées, se souvient-elle. Ça a pris du temps avant qu’une infirmière vienne me débrancher.» Emily est finalement arrivée dans la chambre de sa soeur cinq minutes avant la naissance. Et quelques heures plus tard, c’était à son tour de donner la vie.
Un «marathon miraculeux»
Pendant tout ce temps, la mère des trois filles (et grand-mère) était présente avec elles à l’hôpital. «C’était une expérience incroyable», confie Mme Standup. Au-delà de cette aventure qu’elles raconteront aux bébés quand ils seront grands, Tammy Standup se réjouit que ces trois naissances aient rapproché ses filles. «Chacun grandit et commence sa vie de son côté, avec ses propres cercles d’amis. On ne se réunissait plus aussi souvent. Les bébés nous ont tissé serré à nouveau», raconte la maman visiblement fière de sa famille.
Three sisters give birth within 44 hours at Anna Laberge Hospital
Three sisters from Kahnawake stayed at the same time in the birthing pavilion at Anna Laberge Hospital in Chateauguay at the beginning of August. Emily, Melissa and Kelliann Frate each gave birth to their child in the space of 44 hours.
The three sisters are unanimous that this event could not have been planned. First of all, it was a stroke of luck that the three women became pregnant at the same time. «We were not at the same party», assures Kelliann Frate, laughing.
Their scheduled date to give birth was spread out over nine days, but it happened differently.
«It all began on July 31,» relates the mother of the three girls, Tammy Standup, who pleases herself by calling this adventure her miracle marathon. Kelliann Frate was admitted at about 7:30 p.m. on July 31 at the Chateauguay hospital. Two and a half hours later, she held her newborn little boy in her arms. «It was honestly the best. I was expecting it to take a lot longer because with my first child, I was in for 24 hours,» the mother recalls. Her sister Melissa assisted in the birth even though she, who according to the date foreseen, was also supposed to give birth on that day. «I got scared watching her give birth. I was: Oh God, I’m walking into this,» Melissa confides. Finally, less than 24 hours later, her contractions began. Arriving at the hospital at 4:15 a.m. on August 2, she gave birth to her daughter at about 9 a.m.
As for Emily, the oldest of the three, she had been admitted to the birthing pavilion on August 1 expecting a birth to be provoked artificially. She wanted to be present at the moment Melissa’s daughter was born, even though she was plugged in for monitoring. «I was calling and calling. They were so busy. It took some time before a nurse came to see me,» she remembers. Emily finally arrived in her sister’s room five minutes before the birth took place. And a few hours later, it was her turn to give birth.
A «miraculous marathon»
During all this time, the mother of the three girls (and grandmother) was present with them at the hospital. « This was an unbelievable experience, » confided Tammy Standup. Beyond this adventure that she will be able to tell the babies when they grow up, Tammy rejoices that these three births have brought her daughters closer together. «The thing that is very beautiful about these babies is that everybody grows up. They start their lives in their own circle of friends. We don’t get along together so much. But the babies have brought us all really close again,» says the grandmother, visibly proud of her family.
