Even if the first phase of reopening certain stores in Kahnawake is set for June 1st, the Task Force had to remind non-locals, that until that date, they are not allowed on the territory. One of the reasons for issuing the reminder is the increase of non-locals in Kahnawake this week. “People assumed that because stores have opened in the Greater Montreal area, they are open here”, says Lloyd Phillips, commissioner of Public Safety, adding that Kahnawake operates on its own timeline. Anyone who is in Kahnawake without valid reasons, such as working in essential services, is risking a fine of approximately $1,500. Plan The Task Force explains that a plan is in place for the eventual removal of restrictions on June 1st, when businesses will gradually reopen. Mr. Lloyd also confirms, that once the stores are reopened in Kahnawake, they will be accessible to non-locals.
