At its December 9 council meeting, the City of Châteauguay adopted two new by-laws to encourage eco-responsible practices, namely a framework for the distribution of printed advertising material and a ban on certain single-use items.

As of January 1, 2025, residents who want to receive printed advertising material will have to put a sticker on their mailbox, which they can pick up at City Hall or at the Raymond-Laberge library. The city believes that this measure will reduce the volume of unwanted materials that are delivered.

In addition, Châteauguay merchants will have to stop distributing certain single-use items, such as plates, lids, plastic trays, straws and non-degradable utensils.

The city’s aim is to limit the environmental impact of these products and encourage the use of alternative, more environmentally-friendly items. However, the regulations do not apply to not-for-profit organizations or retailers whose food is packaged outside.
