$4.8 million lawsuit against Mercier: trial date set
The out-of-court negotiations undertaken by the City of Chateauguay and Mercier in order to settle the file linked to the policing service are ‘’a dead issue,’’ announced Chateauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier at a preceding City Council meeting.
After his election in 2017, he wished to settle the litigation ‘’by avoiding lawyers as much as possible.’’ But this is something that does not seem to have been possible, he explained, indicating that the date of the trial ‘’had been fixed.’’ City of Chateauguay communications director Marie-Claude Tremblay confirmed to Le Soleil that no agreement had been concluded between the two towns and that the trial would be held in March of 2019.
Chateauguay turned towards the courts in August of 2016 to obtain what it considered at the time as ‘’the unpaid part by Mercier for police services received for the years of 2014 and 2015.’’ But the amount being claimed is contested by Mercier, which, since July of 2017, has been operating its own police force.
