She is one of 69 recipients from various public safety organizations in the province. The purpose of this award is to “recognize the region's unsung heroes, whose contributions have a significant impact on their community, the province and, in some cases, nationally and internationally.”
In Ms. Séguin's case, the medal was presented to her in honor of “her dedication to indigenous communities and municipal police services,” the City of Châteauguay said in a publication posted on social networks.
Prior to joining the Châteauguay Police Department in 2021, the policewoman had a long career with the Sûreté du Québec, particularly in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. In October 2015, in the wake of a report on the program Enquête about police abuse of indigenous women in Val-d'Or, the then Minister of Public Security appointed Ginette Séguin as acting director of the Vallée-de-l'Or station. According to the Journal de Montréal, Ms. Séguin had decided to take preventive action. The creation of the mixed indigenous police station improved communication between the police and the indigenous population.
Ms. Séguin said she was honored to receive such a distinction. “The acknowledgment for which I received this award touched me deeply. In recent years, I have had the pleasure of working alongside members of the First Nations, and I have learned a great deal from them,” she wrote on her LinkedIn page.
