(Par Dan Rosenburg – Adaptation Michel Thibault – English follows) Les Raiders de Châteauguay vont disputer la demi-finale de la Ligue de football junior du Québec devant leurs partisans samedi.
L’équipe a obtenu l’avantage du terrain pour ce duel en battant les Riders d’Ottawa 24 à 21, dimanche, à l’école secondaire Louis-Philippe-Paré. L’une des parties les plus excitantes de l’histoire du football junior à Châteauguay.
Les deux équipes se retrouveront en demi-finale au même endroit, le 28 octobre, à compter de 20h.
Fin de match endiablée
Le dernier quart de la joute de dimanche a tenu les spectateurs en haleine. C’était 14-14. Remi Hort a réussi son troisième placement de la journée pour procurer une avance de 17-14 aux Raiders. Ottawa a rebondi sur la séquence suivante. Ryan MacNamee a inscrit un touché à partir de la ligne de deux verges après une feinte de botté de placement. Le tableau indicateur a affiché 21 pour les visiteurs.
À leur tour de manipuler le ballon, les Raiders ne sont allés nulle part. Ottawa a ensuite transporté le précieux objet au centre du terrain. C’est ce qui a mené au point tournant du match. L’as châteauguois Serge Pilon a recouvré un échappé puis il a couru jusqu’à la ligne de touché, à une distance de 65 verges. Il restait moins de trois minutes au cadran. La défensive des Raiders a tenu Ottawa à l’écart du pointage jusqu’à la fin.
En début de partie, les Raiders ont tiré de l’arrière 14 à 6. Ils ont nivelé les chances quand le quart arrière Mario Porreca a complété une passe de touché de 32 verges à Jaylon Greaves et alimenté Darryl Charles pour un converti de 2 points.
En plus de Pilon, Sanders Armand, Richie Vernet, Kevin Turcotte et Patrick Mistiva ont notamment brillé en défensive pour les Raiders.
Junior Raiders earn home playoff showdown with Ottawa

One of the most exciting junior football games ever seen in Chateauguay took place at the LPP gridiron last Sunday with the Chateauguay Junior Raiders squeezing out a hard-fought 24-21 triumph over the Ottawa Junior Riders. As a result the Raiders earned home-field advantage when the two clubs renew hostilities in a sudden-death semi-final playoff matchup at LPP this Saturday at 8 p.m.
When Remi Hort booted his third field goal of the contest early in the fourth quarter to snap a 14-14 deadlock amd give the Raiders a 17-14 lead, Chateauguay fans began to count their blessings. But Ottawa bounced back on the next sequence of plays when Ryan MacNamee bulled over the goal-line from two yards out on a nervy fake field-goal attempt. The convert put the visitors ahead 21-17 and set the stage for an amazing finish.
The Raiders went nowhere on their next possession and Ottawa took over the ball at midfield. That led to the turning point of the contest as Chateauguay ace Serge Pilon recovered a fumble with 2:31 remaining and sprinted 65 yards to paydirt. The Raiders’ defence held the rest of the way to seal the verdict.
Despite the absence of receiver Daniel Mancini who was sidelined with a pulled hamstring, Chateauguay quarterback Mario Porreca completed a 32-yard touchdown aerial to Jaylon Greaves and a two-point convert toss to Darryl Charles to tie the score at 14-14 after the visitors had run up a 14-6 cushion.
In addition to his defensive heroics, Pilon delivered a bone-jarring hit from his halfback position; Sanders Armand pounced on an Ottawa bobble to set up a Hort placement; Richie Vernet contributed a key sack of QB Kevin Turcotte, and Patrick Mistiva showed cunning anticipation in breaking up a dangerous Riders’ pass play.
Although there were many less points scored than in the first meeting of the two teams in Ottawa last September 9 when the Riders outlasted Chateauguay 45-43, last Sunday’s encounter was no less captivating.
