Girls' Youth Rugby: Two Châteauguay Schools Compete in Regional Finals
Rugby is thriving in the region. The girls' youth team from Valley Regional High School won gold and Howard S. Billings won silver at the regional finals last fall.
The two Châteauguay clubs from the New Frontiers School Board faced off in the final.
According to Howard S. Billings' girls' rugby coach, Gaël Dulude, the team is "happy to have finished the season, but disappointed to have missed out on the gold medal".
Mr. Dulude reports that three of his grade 11 players were injured, which hindered their performance during the tournament. The captain, in particular, suffered a leg fracture. "An extra year of experience makes a difference, especially at this age," says the coach.
The first half of the final match was in favor of the Billings team, but according to coach Gaël Dulude, the students from the opposing school "opened the floodgates" during the second half.
The previous year, the youth team had won gold. Mr. Dulude hopes that the school will come back strong for the next season, hoping that his players in grades 9 and 10 gain experience for the upcoming fall.
