(English follows) Deux débuts d’incendies causés par des cendres chaudes ont mobilisé le Service de sécurité incendie de Châteauguay au cours de la dernière période de grand froid. Les pompiers lancent donc un appel à la vigilance afin d’éviter d’autres incendies du genre lors que le froid reprendra de son mordant.
Dans un communiqué diffusé le 8 janvier, ils énumèrent les précautions à prendre lorsque vient le temps de disposer des cendres provenant d’un appareil de chauffage au bois. Les voici :
- Vider régulièrement les cendres de votre appareil de chauffage.
- Disposer des cendres dans un contenant métallique à fond surélevé et muni d’un couvercle métallique.
- N’utilisez jamais un aspirateur pour ramasser des cendres chaudes.
- Déposez le contenant à l’extérieur sur une surface non combustible.
- Gardez une distance minimale d’un mètre entre le contenant métallique et les murs de la maison, du garage, du cabanon et de toute autre matière combustible comme une haie ou un abri de toile.
- Laissez les cendres reposer dans le contenant au moins 3 à 7 jours avant de les jeter à la poubelle.
- Avant de transvider les cendres dans un autre type de contenant, vérifiez que ces dernières soient parfaitement refroidies. Brassez les cendres régulièrement afin de vous assurer qu’aucune chaleur ne s’en dégage.

Two incidents caused by hot ashes

Two fire beginnings caused by hot cinders mobilized the Chateauguay Fire Security service during the recent intense cold period. The firemen are launching an appeal to vigilance in order to avoid other fires of that type when the cold weather recaptures its freezing bite.
In a press release issued on January 8, they enumerate the precautions to take when the time comes to dispose of the ashes coming from a wood stove. Here they are :
-Regularly empty the ashes of your heating apparatus.
-Dispose of the ashes in a metal container by lifting it from the bottom up and equipping it with a metal cover.
-Never use a vacuum cleaner to collect hot ashes.
-Dispose of the contents outdoors on a non-combustible surface.
-Keep a minimum distance of one metre between the metal container and the walls of the house, the garage, the cabana and all other combustible materials such as hay or a canvas shelter.
-Let the ashes rest in the container for at least three to seven days before throwing them into the garbage can.
-Before emptying the cinders into another type of container, check that these containers are completely cold. Shake the ashes regularly in order to assure yourself that they are giving off no heat.
