The idea of authorizing urban chickens is being studied by Châteauguay officials.

A citizen, Catherine Doré, had brought the subject to their attention in February. The question was raised once again at the April 20th city council meeting. “Has there been any progress in this file?” a citizen asked via email. Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier responded by saying that he had actually cut out an article from Le Devoir entitled “Ruée vers les poules aux œufs d’or” (The Hunt for the Hens That Lay the Golden Eggs). “It is clear that chickens are becoming increasingly present in cities, especially given the current circumstances,” he agreed.

“No, we haven’t moved forward on this, but I am interested in moving forward,” he continued. “I don’t know how we will do it. I’m sure you understand that we have a number of problems.” The Mayor suggested that the council create a committee to analyze the situation and see what is being done elsewhere.

Originally opposed to the idea, councillor Lucie Laberge has changed her position. “Regarding the famous chicken coops, a citizen sent me a link on Kijiji. They are small coops that could be installed in the backyard of an urban residence. I was against it, but the manner in which it is set up is quite clean. I think that with regulations we could accept,” she stated.
