Arthur Laberge l’homme politique

C’est à Châteauguay que naît Arthur Laberge, le 27 janvier 1888. Après ses études, il travaille au magasin familial, en bordure de la rivière, dans Châteauguay Heights, puis après le décès de son père en 1929, il ouvre son propre commerce sur la rue Principale, à proximité de l’église Saint-Joachim.
Parallèlement à son métier de commerçant, Arthur Laberge s’engage dans sa communauté et en politique.
À 35 ans, Arthur Laberge devient maire de la paroisse de Saint-Joachim-de-Châteauguay. Au cours de son mandat, qui se termine en 1929, le conseil municipal procède à l’adoption d’une résolution pour la construction du huitième pont traversant la rivière Châteauguay (à la jonction de la rue Principale et des boulevards D’Anjou et Salaberry).
Pendant sa carrière politique, il sera également maire de Châteauguay et député de Châteauguay sous la bannière de l’Union nationale.
En 1989, le conseil municipal décide de donner au pont construit pendant son mandat le toponyme officiel d’Arthur-Laberge en son honneur.

Arthur Laberge was born in Châteauguay on January 27, 1888. After graduation at Collège de Montréal, he worked in the family’s riverside store before opening is own business.
In addition to those activities, Arthur Laberge was active in the community and in politics. At the age of 35, Arthur Laberge becomes mayor of Saint-Joachim-de-Châteauguay parish. He leaded the municipal council into the resolution for the construction of the eighth bridge across the Châteauguay River.
He ran at the provincial election un 1931 but lost it. He then was elected as mayor of Châteauguay from 1943 to 1954. Arthur Laberge then joined Maurice Duplessis’ Union Nationale with whom he was elected twice.
He died while still the Member of Parliament for Châteauguay. In 1989, the municipal council named a bridge in honour of the merchant and politician.
