Châteauguay’s City Council passed loan bylaws totalling $9.7M in October to rebuild roads including Chemin Saint-Bernard and Chemin de la Haute-Rivière, as well as to refurbish various streets.

The city will borrow $5.1M to rebuild a 5.2-kilometre stretch of Chemin Haute-Rivière from Highway 30 in Châteauguay to the border of Sainte-Martine.  At the September public assembly meeting, Châteauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier indicated that the city had submitted an application for a provincial government grant for that project. “We expect to get in and around $2.8M, which represents about half,” he mentioned.

A loan of $1.1M will be dedicated to rebuilding Chemin Saint-Bernard, between Jack Street and the border with Kahnawake. Core drilling work was disrupted earlier this summer by Kahnawake Mohawks who were concerned that the work was related to a residential development project that was being contested by the indigenous community. Mr. Routhier specified that the city had clarified the nature of the work with its neighbours. The core drilling was subsequently allowed to resume.

Questioned about the timeline for the reconstruction of the two main arteries, the city’s Director of Communications, Stéphanie Gosselin, indicated that she could not offer any confirmations at the moment as the City was still in discussions with the Ministry of Transport regarding financial support.

Resurfacing in 2022

The elected officials also borrowed $3.5M which will be used to resurface various streets in the municipality, the list for which has not yet been determined. “The Engineering Department and Projects office will submit a list of suggested streets for resurfacing in 2022 to the new city council,” informed Ms. Gosselin.
