Chateauguay City Council adopted a loan bylaw of $2.5 million at its April 20 assembly to finalize an identification plan, a set of signs and panels identifying municipal sites. The decision was not unanimous.

Six councillors voted in favour and two voted against. “I have a dissenting opinion, especially towards the signalling being electronic,” said alderman Francois Leborgne.”In my opinion, it costs too much and with these technologies we could have an electronic breakdown and the repairs could be very costly.”

Equally opposed, councillor Marcel Deschamps affirmed: “At $2.5 million, I find that it’s too much. We have other priorities than that. In any event, we have difficulty to know exactly, is this for the streets? For computers? We are swimming in unknown waters. $2.5 million! No, no, I am against it.”

 The plan

The identification plan will be produced in stages. It includes welcoming panels at the City’s various entrances; an entry to the Industrial Park visible from Autoroute 30; signs for the City”s 54 parks and the municipal buildings, as well as three numeric panels. This would enable the broadcasting of various messages.

The City launched a call for bids to produce the design of the elements. The opening for bids is scheduled for May 12. “It’s a first step. When we will have resolved the design and this design will be approved by council, we will launch a new call for bids for the production of elements in order of priorities and by year,”” City of Chateauguay communications director Lucie Lamoureux explained in an email.

Considering the requests of the prices made in the market in March, the municipality is anticipating offers between $50,000 and $65,000 to produce the design. We already have this budget which had been planned for the identifying process,” Lamoureux specifies.

The loan of $2.5 million is to finalize the plan. .
